Dear Practice Members and Friends,
Is My Child Sick? There is a minimal understanding of the importance of chiropractic care to the health and well-being of our children. Most think that if they are not in pain then why should they need a doctor. Or, my child is not sick. Why would they need a doctor if they were not sick?
According to the World Health Organization, "Health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being. It involves more than just the absence of disease or infirmity." The symptoms of pain, heart attack, backache, headache, ear infection, etc. are your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. We cannot rely solely on pain and symptoms to determine our health because by the time they surface, it is too late.
The first trauma to occur to our body is the stress of the birth process. As a child grows and begins to crawl, then stand, then walk, they begin to add new stresses. Later, falls, sports injuries, poor diet, school and social stresses all contribute to possible imbalances in the body. Heavy book bags, poor posture while sitting in school; these are all contributing factors to an increased risk of poor health. All of these factors can contribute to spinal degeneration later in life. Therefore, chiropractic care early in childhood development is crucial to their spinal and overall health; to bring proper balance to the child’s body and allow for optimal whole body function.
In the course of chiropractic care, it is common for parents to note that their child's temperament has improved, that he learns better in school, that he or she is more at peace, that he reacts to stress more effectively, sleeps better, and that in general he is more able to function without restriction. These are all indicators of health. At times the symptom that they presenting with may not reduce or eliminated, but signs of improvement to the child’s overall health will show in other ways.
To be truly healthy, a child's emotional health must be nurtured and strengthened. Developing a mental attitude of wellness is essential. When we adopt an attitude of wellness, we take on a belief that being well is a natural, normal state. Our goal is to have outstanding, vibrant health, not just to be free of disease.

Healthy Babies

Having a healthy baby means making sure that you are healthy too. One of the components to ensure your baby’s health as well as your own is proper nutrition, especially prior to conception and early on in the pregnancy.
Folic acid, sometimes called folate, is a B vitamin (B9) found mostly in meats, leafy green vegetables like kale and spinach, citrus fruits, beans and enriched grains. Folic acid is crucial in the development of DNA, which means that it plays a large role in cell growth and development, as well as tissue formation. Repeated studies have shown that women who get 400 micrograms (0.4 milligrams) daily prior to conception and during early pregnancy reduce the risk that their baby will be born with a serious neural tube defect (a birth defect involving incomplete development of the brain and spinal cord) by up to 70%.
Neural tube defects develop in the first 28 days after conception, before many women realize they are pregnant. Many do not realize that their pre-conception choices are just as important as the choices that they make throughout their pregnancy. Only 50% of pregnancies are planned, so any woman who could become pregnant should make sure she's getting enough folic acid.
Seek out a good health food store prenatal vitamin to ensure that you are taking a good quality supplement. Take the steps to improving your overall health, taking a preventative, pro-active approach for yourself and your child.
